How did my choice for coaching come about?
In this blog I will discuss my choice for coaching. I already say a lot about that on my site, but I wanted to go into it a little deeper. Why did I make this choice? What is my approach? An exciting adventure, but one that gives me satisfaction.
Successful teams and personal growth
However, all those boards had one common priority: the responsibility to put together the right team. And to ensure maximum personal growth of all team members. And that’s how I’ve always seen my own role. And often even outside the team; I was regularly pleasantly surprised when young, talented managers from another part of the organization asked me if I wanted to coach them. Looking for personal growth, that’s a great thing to do. All this has partly led to my choice for coaching.
Training and certification
Once I had made the choice, I had to go back to school. And that is what happened, at INSEAD, at Brout and for certification in the Leadership Circle Profile assessment. And for the coming year, the necessary training courses are planned, I would like to tell you more about that in a next blog.
What is my approach as a coach?
I have followed the coaching training at INSEAD (“INSEAD Coaching Certificate”). An intensive process of almost 9 months. And special to be back in the lecture halls in Fontainebleau after 25 years. During this process, you will be asked to put your coaching philosophy on paper. Among other things, I described which principles are leading for me as a coach:
- Connection, with our head and with our heart. Do we understand each other, and is there a way of connecting in which we can be ourselves and create a safe environment? This goes beyond rationally sharing the coaching question. We communicate through the spoken word or written text. We connect through our non-verbal communication, mutual energy and our feelings. That connection is necessary to go on a journey together;
- Curiosity, what is really the heart of the matter? Sometimes the question is clear, sometimes there is a question behind the initial question. An unspoken ambition, behavior that we are not aware of; it can be anything. We put together a puzzle, as it were, and we don’t rest until all the pieces are in place. The feeling once we achieve this is indescribable, the consequences groundbreaking; That’s what we do it for;
- Equality, we are on a journey together. As equal partners in search of personal growth, that’s what I stand for. Coaching is a safe journey of discovery in which everything can be discussed, knowing that everything that is discussed will stay there. Together we look at this and look for the answers.
Once on the road
During the voyage of discovery we will come across all kinds of things. What could that personal growth look like? In doing so, I challenge you to think bigger. And also to paint a picture of what knowledge, experience or competencies are needed for this. Which patterns, conscious or unconscious, hold us back from fully fulfilling our potential? But personal growth can also be aimed at increasing effectiveness in the current position in the current context.
Who do I want to coach?
My target group is the leaders of today and tomorrow. I myself have worked in boards for many years. And I am currently a supervisor at a number of organizations in the private and public sector. From my own experience, I recognize what happens in your development as a leader. As a member of a board of directors, you have to deal with a different role and a different expectation. With your environment (and yourself). It is not uncommon for you to be confronted from one day to the next with a completely different, sometimes intense dynamic with new stakeholders and interests.
I found that fascinating and challenging. And still do, by the way. Which path will lead to success, to growth and to an incredible inner satisfaction? That search, that’s what I do it for!
