Did you know that the episodes of my podcast series ‘DNA of leadership – Perspectives on leadership’ have already been listened to more than 1300 times? It is with great pleasure that I hereby introduce the seventh episode of this series: the conversation with Leon Schaepkens.
Leon is an author, therapist and consultant. His two books ’10 million leadership’ and ‘The F1 society’ were #1 bestsellers at Managementboek. A nice side effect is that the books of Leon and myself are published by the same publisher, S2 publishers. In his work, Leon combines ‘the world of business administration with that of therapy’, as he puts it himself. In our conversation, we discussed Leon’s work as a schema therapist. How his background as a therapist led him to the importance of leadership on the so-called basic needs: safety, connectedness, appreciation, autonomy, self-expression and dealing with boundaries. These ancient human needs are alive and well in the world today, according to Leon. The conversation also discusses how patterns develop in our brains and how to break such a pattern. Why much more is needed than a course in ‘positive thinking’. And also that indicating the direction (what we call ‘vision’) is such an essential task of the leader. How that fulfills various basic needs. Leon’s advice is clear and powerful: as a leader, start with yourself. Time and attention for self-reflection, that is the first step towards effective leadership. For example, by reserving the Friday afternoon for this.
I wish you a lot of fun and inspiration with this episode!
